WHAT: The Plant Sciences Graduate Student Council at UW-Madison is proud to announce that they will again be conducting the Plant Science Merit Badge Workshop for Boy Scouts in and around southern Wisconsin. This event will provide Boy Scouts with the opportunity to learn about multiple aspects of plant science from rising experts in agronomy, botany, horticulture, plant breeding, plant pathology and other related fields in Plant Science.

WHEN: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on August 20th, 2016

WHERE: University of Wisconsin-Madison Campus

HOW: Registration is open for the summer workshop starting May 1st and running until all 60 slots are filled with a tentative cutoff date of June 30th. Space is limited, so if you are interested in registering your boy scout(s), please do so immediately by follow this link:

WHY: This workshop is designed so that each scout who comes PREPARED can earn the plant science merit badge in one day.  A small homework assignment is required before arriving and will be e-mailed to each registrant one month in advance of the workshop along with instructions for how to submit it upon completion. After submission, the homework will be graded and then returned to the scout during the workshop. If a scout misses >25% of the answers, time will be provided to correct these answers and submit for re-grading before the end of the workshop.

The cost of attendance is $15.00 and must be paid when registering for the workshop via PayPal. Information about the exact location and parking information will be provided after registration. The actual workshop will consist of one long introductory lecture attended by all participants.  After this, scouts will be assigned to rotation groups in order to rotate through multiple exploration stations.  These stations will consist of mini-lectures followed by hands-on activities or tours of plant production facilities and gardens on UW-Madison campus. Finally, the last component of the workshop will include a panel of graduate students describing various careers in plant science that they are pursuing and why.

Each scout will be expected to take notes throughout the event on a worksheet provided at check-in.  Only successful completion of both the homework and the worksheet will allow each scout to be signed off on completing the merit badge, no exceptions. We welcome and encourage parents and scout leaders to attend as adult chaperones during the workshop.
